A.H. Riise Black Barrel, also known as Old St. Croix Black Barrel Navy Spiced, is a dark and distinctly aromatic spiced spirit crafted with an emphasis on full-bodied flavor and use in premium cocktails. It was developed in collaboration between a master blender and experienced bartenders and is based on the barrels used for the Royal Danish Navy collection.
Characteristics:
Heavily charred oak barrels play a key role in the aging process. The intense charring alters the surface of the wood, helping to create a smoother, rounder profile and imparting deeper notes of roasted nuts, mocha, and dark chocolate to the blend.
Tasting Profile:
Color: Walnut.
Aroma: Mocha, walnuts, roasted figs, and gently charred oak.
Taste: Full-bodied and intense, with Christmas spices, dark chocolate, and darker notes of sweetness.
Finish: Long and gradual, with returning notes of mocha.
The aroma features mocha, walnuts, roasted figs, and lightly toasted oak. The flavor is intense and rich, with warming Christmas spices, dark sweetness, and dark chocolate. In the long finish, mocha notes reappear and slowly fade away.
Serving:
A.H. Riise Black Barrel is crafted to hold its own even in bolder cocktails. It pairs perfectly with, for example, a Cuba Libre or Dark ’n’ Stormy, but you can also enjoy it neat or on the rocks.
About the A.H. Riise Brand:
A.H. Riise is a premium brand of rum blends inspired by the legacy of Danish pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise, who worked on the island of Saint Thomas in the former Danish West Indies beginning in 1838. The brand carries on the historical tradition of Caribbean spirits and is known for its rich, elegant, and distinctly aromatic blended products.
Interestingly, in 2025, the A.H. Riise brand was officially renamed Old St. Croix, a move the brand itself describes as a return to its original roots and historical name. As a result, you may come across both the A.H. Riise label and the newer branding under the name Old St. Croix on the market today.
