Peated Rum Bourbon Finish is a limited-edition peated rum from the Peated Rum Batch 1 series. It is a premium blend of rums aged 1 to 8 years that has been matured in American oak barrels previously used for bourbon. This edition combines a sweeter rum base, the fruitiness of the bourbon barrel, and an unconventional peat smoke, which is typically associated more with the world of whiskey.

Behind the creation of Peated Rum is the Dutch company Schotman and its owner, Eric Koster. He asked himself why only whiskey is peated and what rum with a smoky profile would taste like. After his initial experiments, he discovered that rum carries the smoky aroma surprisingly well. The result was the first peat-smoked rum, a concept that Eric Koster had patented.

Production:

Peated Rum Bourbon Finish is the first release of this variant from the Batch 1 series. Fermentation takes approximately 504 to 535 hours, and the rum is a blend of column- and pot-still distillates. Aging took place in American oak barrels previously used for bourbon, specifically Jim Beam.

The first release of Peated Rum was bottled in the summer of 2021, with only 230 bottles of each variant produced, making this edition a highly limited rum for collectors and lovers of experimental spirits.

Tasting Profile:

Nose: Floral and fruity, with notes of banana, buttery caramel, and subtle smoke.

Palate: Distinctive and complex. Peat comes through strongly at the start, complemented in the finish by notes of banana, menthol, eucalyptus, earthy minerals, and heavier, oily flavors.

Finish: Smoky, fresh, and earthy, with notes of menthol, eucalyptus, and a lingering hint of peat.

The aroma features floral and fruity notes, bananas, buttery caramel, and a hint of smoke. The complex peaty character emerges almost immediately on the palate, gradually blending with banana, fresh menthol, eucalyptus, earthy mineral notes, and a heavier oily texture.

Peated Rum is an original brand of peat-smoked rums, created by the Dutch company Schotman and its owner Eric Koster. The brand was born from a simple yet bold idea: to bring the smoky and peaty character known from the world of whiskey to rum.

Schotman is one of the newer companies in the spirits market, but thanks to Peated Rum, it has clearly distinguished itself from conventional rum production. Eric Koster began experimenting by smoking a small amount of rum and then aging it in a small cask. When it turned out that the rum could carry the peat smoke surprisingly well, the first limited edition of Peated Rum was created.
