Why is only whiskey smoked with peat? And what would the smoked rum taste like? Eric Koster, the owner of Schotman, asked himself exactly such questions. The first batch of Peated Rum did not take long to arrive. Since Eric Koster is the first ever to create peat-smoked rum, he patented his idea.
The world's first peat rum was breathed into life by the Dutch company Schotman, which is one of the youngest on the spirits market. Eric Koster first tried to smoke only a small amount to see how the rum would react and if the aroma of the smoke could be captured in the rum at all. The rum then matured in a small cask. When it came time to taste the result, Eric Koster was more than pleasantly surprised. And ready to create the first sharp version.
Schotman Peated Rum First Release consists of five different flavor versions aged in bourbon, cognac, Pedro Ximenez sherry, Port and Moscatel casks. The first release was bottled in summer 2021. It is a limited edition of 230 of each design. We managed to get a few dozen bottles for the Czech market.
The aroma of the variant, which was matured in bourbon barrels, is dominated by floral and fruity notes, bananas with butter caramel and a little smoke. After drinking, the complex taste of peat appears almost immediately, which is only complemented at the end by notes of bananas with a fresh hint of menthol and eucalyptus. There will also be a hint of earthy minerals and heavier, oily flavors.
