Product description
Littlemill 25 Year Old Private Cellar Edition 2015 is a rare Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the defunct Littlemill Distillery. For the first release in the Private Cellar series, Master Blenders John Petersen and Michael Henry selected ten casks from 1989 and 1990 that, in their opinion, best represented the character of the historic distillery. Only 1,500 individually numbered bottles were released worldwide.
The 1989 whisky was casked on December 17, 1989; the remaining portions come from distillates casked between April 1 and April 4, 1990. The distillates matured for 25 years in a combination of American and European oak casks. Ten selected casks were then blended, and the whiskey underwent final maturation in first-fill European oak casks previously used for Oloroso sherry. It was bottled in 2015 at 50.4% ABV.
The long maturation preserves Littlemill’s characteristic lighter and fruity character, complemented here by a more pronounced influence of Oloroso sherry. The result is a complex whisky combining floral and fruity notes with vanilla, honeyed sweetness, creamy caramel, and matured oak.
Tasting Profile:
Nose: Delicate floral and vanilla notes complemented by honeyed sweetness.
Palate: Fresh fruit typical of the Lowlands style, vanilla, honey, and creamy caramel, complemented by the influence of long maturation and Oloroso sherry casks.
Collector’s Edition:
The Private Cellar Edition 2015 comes in a luxurious presentation box. In addition to the main decanter, the original set includes a 0.05-liter sample of the same whiskey, allowing you to taste the whiskey without opening the collector’s bottle, and a piece of oak from one of the casks in which the whiskey was aged.
Each bottle is individually numbered, and this first Private Cellar Edition was limited to just 1,500 bottles worldwide.
About the Littlemill Distillery:
Littlemill was a historic Scottish distillery located in Bowling on the banks of the River Clyde, near Glasgow. Its history dates back to the 18th century, and the brand claims it was the oldest licensed distillery in Scotland. The year 1772 was preserved on one of the warehouses for more than two centuries, and an official record dated November 2, 1773, has been preserved regarding a license granted to Robert Muir of Littlemill to sell beer and other taxed spirits.
Duncan Thomas opened an important chapter in its history in the 1930s. Under his leadership, the distillery switched from the traditional Lowland triple distillation to double distillation and experimented with unusual hybrid stills equipped with rectification columns. Thanks to these, it was able to produce several different styles of whiskey, ranging from the light and delicate Littlemill to the experimental peated Dumbuck and the fuller-bodied Dunglass.
Littlemill ceased production in 1994; a few years later, most of the complex was dismantled, and in 2004, a fire destroyed the remaining parts of the distillery.
No new whisky will ever be produced here again, so current releases come exclusively from limited stocks of historic casks. Their selection is now overseen by Master Blender Michael Henry, who strives to preserve Littlemill’s characteristic light, floral, and fruity character for these final limited-edition bottlings.
