Product description

Tamdhu 50 Year Old is an exceptionally rare single malt whiskey from Speyside, Scotland, created to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Tamdhu Distillery. At the time of its release, it was the oldest whiskey the distillery had ever released. From a single cask, only 100 decanters were produced for the entire world.

Production and Aging:

The whiskey was distilled on November 2, 1963 and subsequently spent five decades in a single first-fill European oak sherry butt. It was bottled in March 2017 at a cask strength of 55.6% alcohol. Such a long maturation in a sherry cask has given the whiskey an exceptionally deep character with rich notes of fruit, spice, chocolate, oak, and roasted tones.

Tamdhu 50 Year Old is not only an exceptionally old whiskey but also a showcase of the style for which Tamdhu is renowned. The distillery has long specialized in single malt whiskeys matured in high-quality sherry casks.

Tasting Profile:

Color: A deep, naturally dark color resulting from long maturation in sherry casks.

Nose: Forest fruits, elegant oak, and orange, complemented by rose hips, dark chocolate, and marzipan.

Taste: Rich and complex. Notes of clove, licorice, espresso, and baked apples emerge, followed by banana, black pepper, and toasted almonds.

Finish: Exceptionally long, rich, and complex, with notes of cocoa, ginger, walnuts, and maple syrup.

Recommended Serving:

A whiskey this old and rare is best enjoyed neat at room temperature. Alternatively, a few drops of water can be added to help bring out its deep sherry character. Tamdhu generally recommends enjoying its whiskeys neat or with a small amount of water.

Decanter Design and Packaging:

The presentation of Tamdhu 50 Year Old also reflects the exceptional nature of the whiskey itself. The special decanter was created by a team of British artisans led by glass designer Katy Holford, crystal specialists from Royal Brierley, and silversmiths from the luxury jewelry house Hamilton & Inches.

The decanter features an elegant, distinctly shaped body and is accented with decorative elements made of sterling silver.

Each decanter is housed in a solid, cylindrical case made of stained oak and adorned with sterling silver. The packaging’s design references the distillery’s location on the River Spey, the historic Victorian train station, and sherry casks—elements closely tied to Tamdhu’s history.

About the Tamdhu Distillery:

The Tamdhu Distillery was founded in 1897 in the heart of Speyside, near the River Spey. Shortly after production began, the distillery started using sherry casks, and it was precisely this maturation process that gradually became the hallmark of Tamdhu whisky.

In 2010, the distillery was closed by its then-owner, Edrington, but as early as 2011, it was purchased by the family-owned company Ian Macleod Distillers. Production was subsequently resumed in 2013.

The 50-year-old whisky from 1963 thus symbolically commemorated not only the 120-year history of Tamdhu, but also the distillery’s rebirth.

Today, Tamdhu is known primarily for its consistent focus on sherry cask maturation. The brand’s whiskies derive their color naturally from the casks and are not artificially colored.
