Cihuatán Sahumerio is a limited-edition Salvadoran rum inspired by a Mayan ritual of love and fire. The name “Sahumerio” refers to a sacred vessel in which the Maya kept a fire burning as a symbol of love, protection, and family bonds. Master blender Gabriela Ayala drew inspiration from this very tradition when creating the rum.

Aging:

The rum was created by blending four vintage rums aged 12 to 14 years that were aged in bourbon barrels. The result is a complex, aromatic, and unusually layered profile featuring notes of incense, dried myrtle, cocoa butter, dried apricots, and floral honey.

Tasting Profile:

Color: Amber.

Aroma: Incense, dried myrtle, cocoa butter, dried apricots, and floral honey.

Taste: Rich and complex, with notes of cocoa, dried fruit, honey, spices, and a subtle balsamic character.

Finish: Long, warm, and aromatic, with lingering notes of honey, cacao, and dried fruit.

The individual notes were inspired by the offerings that, according to Mayan traditions, were burned in Sahumerio vessels. Dried flowers and honey symbolized romantic love, dried fruit symbolized family unity, incense symbolized friendship, and cacao beans with cacao butter symbolized protection. This symbolism is reflected not only in the flavor profile but also in the striking label design featuring the goddess Chantico.

Cihuatán is a Salvadoran rum brand associated with a distillery founded in 2004, which is the first and only distillery of its kind in El Salvador. The brand draws inspiration from Mayan culture, local legends, and the region’s history. Individual editions therefore often bear names referencing deities, natural symbols, and stories from the indigenous civilizations of Central America.
