Product description

Loch Lomond 50 Year Old is an exceptionally rare Scottish single malt whiskey that ranks among the most significant collector’s editions in the history of the Loch Lomond distillery. The whiskey was distilled in 1967 and, after fifty years of aging, was bottled in 2017 at 46.2% alcohol. Only 60 numbered decanters were produced worldwide.

Maturation:

The whiskey comes from a single cask lot and, during its exceptionally long maturation, was aged in two types of oak. For the first 31 years, it rested in an American oak hogshead. In 1998, it was transferred to a European oak hogshead, where it aged for another 19 years. This combination gave the whisky a complex character with pronounced oak spices, dried fruit, and rich tropical fruit notes.

Tasting Profile:

Color: Deep amber, natural and clear.

Nose: Oak spice, cloves, cinnamon, sultanas, raisins, and vanilla fudge.

Palate: Silky and rich, with tropical fruit, fresh pineapple, ripe banana, and honeyed sweetness.

Finish: Long and warming, with notes of ginger, gooseberry, elderflower, and grapefruit.

The aroma features cloves, cinnamon, raisins, sultanas, and creamy vanilla fudge. The taste is silky and layered, with notes of fresh pineapple, ripe banana, and honeyed sweetness. The long finish brings ginger, gooseberry, elderflower, and zesty grapefruit.

Limited Edition:

At the time of its release, the Loch Lomond 50 Year Old was the oldest and rarest single malt whiskey the distillery had ever released. Production was limited to just 60 numbered bottles, and the original retail price was approximately 12,000 GBP per bottle.

Thanks to the combination of 50 years of aging, the extremely limited production run, and the exceptional packaging, this whisky is intended primarily for discerning collectors and connoisseurs.

Bottle and Packaging Design:

Just as exceptional as the whisky itself is its luxurious packaging, called The Tempest Chest. It was created for this edition by the Scottish design studio Method Studio.

Each hand-blown crystal decanter features a hand-cut faceted base and is housed in a solid oak case. The surface of the case is hand-shaped to resemble the stormy waters of Loch Lomond at dusk. The interior is upholstered in indigo-colored leather, and the chest locks with a brass key.

The package also includes a glass vial containing a sample of the same 50-year-old whiskey, housed in a solid, lathed brass case inspired by the Loch Lomond distillery’s distinctive Straight Neck stills.

Loch Lomond Distillery:

Loch Lomond Distillery is a distillery whose story is as impressive as the beautiful landscape of Loch Lomond. The first mentions of a distillery on the shores of this picturesque lake date back to 1814, near Tarbet at the northern end of the lake; however, the exact date of the original distillery’s closure has been lost to history, leaving behind only a small number of records.

The current Loch Lomond Distillery, founded in 1965 through the initiative of the former owners of the Littlemill Distillery in Bowling, a few miles from Glasgow, continues the tradition of Scotch whisky production with boundless passion and innovation. Every drop of whisky from the Loch Lomond distillery is an expression of a deep connection to the local landscape and history, offering whisky lovers around the world a unique and unforgettable experience.
