Zacapa is a town in eastern Guatemala, founded in 1876. Rum was named after 100th anniversary of the founding of the town in 1976. Early bottles of Zacapa took inspiration from a bottle covered with a petate – hand woven mat made from palm leaves. These come from the Mayan era and were made in Esquipulas not far from the borders with Honduras and El Salvador. Lately the bottles have a strip around their center.
Ron Zacapa Centenario 23Y was known as Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Años. But this name was changed because of a confusion, which caused, that people thought it is a 23-year-old rum instead of a mix of rums at the age between 6 and 23 years.
