Hermès Un Jardin de Monsieur Li is one of the most poetic fragrances in the Parfums-Jardins collection. It was created by perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena as an olfactory meditation inspired by a Chinese garden—a place of balance, silence, and the passing of time, where reality gently blends with fantasy. This is not an exuberant garden, but a minimalist, calm and harmonious landscape where water, stone, trees and flowers exist in perfect balance.
Characteristics:
The fragrance opens with a fresh and sparkling citrus composition dominated by bergamot and slightly bitter kumquat. The introduction is light, clean, and very elegant, with a feeling of morning dew and air after rain. It is not sharp or sour, but rather calm and natural.
The heart unfolds with jasmine sambac, which adds a delicate floral softness to the fragrance without sweetness or opulence. The jasmine here is not intoxicating, but clear, slightly green and meditative – like flowers reflecting on the surface of a garden pond. The floral notes combine with a watery and vegetal impression that evokes wet stones and the shade of bamboo groves.
The base of the fragrance remains clean, quiet, and mineral, with subtle green and woody undertones. There is no classic heavy base – the fragrance fades like a calm thought rather than leaving a strong trail. It is this restraint that is its greatest charm.
Fragrance profile:
Top notes: Bergamot, kumquat.
Middle notes: Sambac jasmine.
Base notes: Delicate green and mineral notes.
Bottle design:
The iconic lantern-shaped bottle has a delicate yellow gradient inspired by the imperial color of China. The illustration on the box by artist Li Xin evokes calligraphy and the flow of ink – a visual parallel to the flow of the fragrance itself.
Hermès Un Jardin de Monsieur Li is an eau de toilette for lovers of minimalism, purity, and inner peace. It is perfectly unisex, very elegant, and ideal for everyday wear, especially in the warmer months. It does not attract attention loudly, but leaves an impression of sophistication and harmony.
