Schotman Single Cask Foursquare Rum 17Y 2005 is an exceptional single-cask rum from the renowned Foursquare distillery in Barbados. It is the second release in the Schotman Barrel Selection series and a limited edition of just 278 bottles. The rum was distilled in 2005, drawn in July 2022, and bottled at cask strength 58.4%.
Production:
This rum was created through a combination of pot still and column still distillation at a single distillery. It aged for a total of 17 years—first 11 years in the tropics in Barbados, then another 6 years on the mainland in the United Kingdom. The aging took place in ex-bourbon barrels. The rum was not sweetened, colored, filtered, or otherwise modified with additives, so it offers an authentic expression of the barrel, distillation, and long aging.
Tasting Profile:
Color: Dark yellow, consistent with long aging. No added caramel.
Aroma: Intense and complex, with pronounced wood, vanilla, and a subtle sweetness from the barrel. Notes of caramelized apple, apple with cinnamon, and hints reminiscent of apple pie emerge.
Taste: Full-bodied and rich. Dominated by oak notes, coconut, chocolate, sweet almonds, and vanilla. After letting it breathe in the glass, a peppery dryness, a fresh apple note, and a more pronounced structure from barrel aging emerge.
Finish: Long, drier, and complex. Coconut, tutti frutti, vanilla, black pepper, and a woody finish linger.
Schotman Single Cask Foursquare Rum 17Y 2005 is a full-bodied, rich, and layered rum for more experienced tasters. The aroma combines pronounced wood, vanilla, caramelized apple, cinnamon, and delicate fruity notes. After a moment in the glass, the rum softens and gradually reveals further layers, so it deserves time and slow savoring.
The palate is dominated by oak notes, coconut, chocolate, sweet almonds, vanilla, and a gradually emerging peppery dryness. Despite its high alcohol content, it does not come across as aggressive—the strength is noticeable but well-integrated. The rum evolves significantly in the glass, so each subsequent sniff and sip can reveal a new nuance.
Schotman Single Cask Foursquare Rum 17Y 2005 is a rum for connoisseurs seeking an authentic Barbadian single cask at cask strength.
About the Peated Rum brand and the producer Schotman:
Peated Rum is an original brand of peat-smoked rums, created by the Dutch company Schotman and its owner Eric Koster. The brand was born from a simple yet bold idea: to bring the smoky and peaty character known from the world of whiskey to rum.
Schotman is one of the newer companies in the spirits market, but thanks to Peated Rum, it has clearly distinguished itself from conventional rum production. Eric Koster began experimenting by smoking a small amount of rum and then aging it in a small cask. When it turned out that the rum could carry the peat smoke surprisingly well, the first limited edition of Peated Rum was created.
