Product description

Black Tot Rum 40Y is an extremely rare Guyanese rum from 1975, aged for more than 40 years and bottled at a natural cask strength of 44.2%. This limited edition consists of just 606 bottles, created from six original casks. The rum comes from the legendary wooden pot still facility Port Mourant, which is known for its deep, heavier, and distinctly aromatic character in Demerara rums.

This edition references the historic Black Tot Day, July 31, 1970, when the British Royal Navy ended the long tradition of a daily rum ration for sailors. It is this maritime history that forms the foundation of the Black Tot brand identity.

Tasting Profile:

Nose: Intense notes of licorice, star anise, black olives, tobacco smoke, and pine, complemented by citrus zest and cinnamon.

Taste: Rich and full-bodied, with a pronounced texture. Notes of molasses, cherries, fennel, raisins, and blackcurrants emerge with a smoky undertone.

Finish: Very long, gradually evolving, with a balance of sweet, spicy, and smoky-woody notes.

Black Tot Rum 40Y is intended primarily for collectors and experienced rum enthusiasts. It offers a rich, heavier, and layered profile with pronounced notes of molasses, licorice, spices, dried fruit, tobacco, and smoke. Thanks to its long aging, it has a deep, complex character and evolves very slowly in the glass.

About Black Tot / Elixir Distillers:

Black Tot is a rum brand created by Elixir Distillers, an independent British specialist in premium spirits. The brand draws on the history of the British Royal Navy and its famous rum rations, known as “tot.” This tradition ended on July 31, 1970, when sailors were issued their final ration of rum—a day still known today as Black Tot Day.

Black Tot focuses on rums inspired by the original style of naval blends. It works with rums from traditional rum-producing countries such as Guyana, Barbados, and Jamaica, and is committed to transparency regarding the composition, origin, and character of each edition.
