Product description

Castello Banfi Rosso di Montalcino is a classic Tuscan red wine made exclusively from the Sangiovese grape variety in the prestigious Montalcino region. It offers a typical combination of fresh fruit, elegant structure, and subtle oak influences. It is more approachable and fresher than Brunello di Montalcino, yet it retains the character and elegance of wines from this famous region.

According to the Banfi winery, the 2009 vintage was exceptionally favorable for Sangiovese. A cooler and rainier start to the growing season was followed by a warm summer with cooler nights, which promoted the development of aromatic compounds and polyphenols. A dry and sunny September and October subsequently allowed the grapes to ripen optimally. Banfi characterizes this vintage as very generous, and in the case of Sangiovese, exceptionally elegant.

Tasting Profile:

Color: Deep ruby red.

Aroma: Rich and fruity, with notes of plums, blackberries, violets, and a subtle hint of licorice.

Palate: Full-bodied, soft, and well-structured, with pronounced fruitiness and the elegant character of Sangiovese.

Conclusion: Long and lingering, with a fruity and slightly spicy finish.

The aroma is dominated by ripe fruit with notes of plums, blackberries, and violets, complemented by a subtle hint of licorice. The palate is broad, soft, and harmonious, with good structure and a long, fruity finish.

Aging and Production:

The wine fermented at a controlled temperature in a combination of French oak and stainless steel tanks. It then aged for approximately 3 to 6 months, half in large French oak barrels and half in barrique barrels. This aging method preserves the fruity character of Sangiovese while imparting structure and subtle woody complexity to the wine.

Food Pairing Recommendations:

Castello Banfi Rosso di Montalcino is a highly versatile wine for dining. It pairs excellently with pasta with ragù, roasted and grilled red meat, game, or medium-aged cheeses. The recommended serving temperature is 16 to 18 °C.

About Banfi Winery:

Banfi was founded in Montalcino in 1978 by the Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani. The winery has gradually become one of the region’s leading producers and has long been dedicated to researching the Sangiovese grape variety, working with specific vineyard sites, and utilizing modern winemaking technologies. The first vintage of Banfi’s Rosso di Montalcino was produced in 1982.
