Product description

Bunnahabhain 40Y 30th Anniversary Signatory Vintage is an exceptionally rare single malt Scotch whisky from the island of Islay, released by the independent bottler Signatory Vintage to mark its 30th anniversary. The whisky was distilled on April 3, 1978 and, after forty years of maturation, bottled on June 12, 2018.

Maturation:

It was matured exclusively in a single refill sherry butt, No. 2587. Only 484 bottles were produced from this cask, making this edition a highly sought-after collector’s item intended primarily for lovers of old whiskies, connoisseurs of the Bunnahabhain distillery, and collectors of limited-edition Signatory Vintage releases.

Long maturation in a sherry cask has created a complex profile that blends ripe fruit, spices, and a deep woody character. Among the distilleries of Islay, Bunnahabhain is known primarily for its less peaty and more elegant style. In this bottling, the fruitiness, ripeness, and influence of long contact with the sherry cask can truly shine.

Tasting Profile:

Nose: Spicy and fruity, with the character of long maturation in sherry casks.

Palate: Rich, ripe, and complex, with fruity and spicy notes complemented by a deep oak character.

Finish: Long, warm, and elegantly spicy.

Serving:

The whisky was bottled at 47.8% ABV, without the need to dilute its distinctive character. It is best enjoyed slowly, neat. A few drops of water can help open up additional aromatic layers.

Luxury Gift Packaging:

The whisky is housed in a prestigious lockable case, which also includes two tasting glasses. Inside is a certificate with detailed information about the specific cask, the date of distillation, bottling, and the total number of bottles.

The striking blue design of the label and certificate references the Signatory Vintage 30th Anniversary 1988–2018 series. The luxurious packaging underscores the collectible nature of this exceptionally rare whisky.

Bunnahabhain 40Y 30th Anniversary Signatory Vintage is an exceptional whisky for experienced tasters and collectors. It combines four decades of maturation, a single sherry cask, a limited run of 484 bottles, and an anniversary release from one of the most respected independent bottlers.

About the Bunnahabhain Distillery:

Bunnahabhain is a Scottish distillery founded in 1881 on the remote northeastern coast of the island of Islay. Its name comes from Gaelic and roughly means “mouth of the river,” referring to the distillery’s location near the Margadale spring.

Unlike many other Islay distilleries, Bunnahabhain is traditionally associated primarily with a softer, less peaty style of whisky. It is characterized by fruitiness, a slightly oily texture, a maritime character, and frequent use of sherry casks. However, the distillery also produces peated editions.

Bunnahabhain has built a reputation as a producer of elegant and complex single malt whiskies that respond well to long maturation. Older vintages are therefore highly sought-after collector’s items.

About Signatory Vintage:

Signatory Vintage is an independent Scottish bottler founded in 1988 by Andrew Symington and his brother. The original idea was to have each bottle signed by a prominent figure, which is where the name Signatory came from. Although this concept did not last long, the name stuck with the brand.

The company purchases individual casks from Scottish distilleries, allows them to mature further, and then bottles them under its own name. It focuses primarily on single cask and small-batch releases, for which it precisely specifies the distillery, vintage, cask type and number, and the dates of distillation and bottling.

In 2002, Andrew Symington purchased the Edradour distillery, which later became the home of Signatory Vintage. Today, the brand is particularly valued for its wide selection of vintage whiskies, transparent information, and access to rare casks from renowned Scottish distilleries.
