Product description

Boukman Botanical Rhum is a dry and complex Haitian spirit produced from rhum agricole, a rum base distilled from fresh sugarcane juice. The entire distillation and bottling process takes place in Haiti in collaboration with two local family-run businesses.

Production:

The character of the spirit is rounded out by a carefully selected blend of Haitian woods, bitter orange peel, and aromatic spices. The ingredients include local woods such as bois bandé, zou’devant, campêche, bois cochon, and oak, as well as allspice, cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, and natural bitter almond extract.

The result is a distinctive botanical spirit with an alcohol content of 45%, which retains a dry profile and pairs well with other cocktail ingredients.

Tasting Profile:

Nose: Aromatic and spicy, with notes of bitter orange, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, and local woods.

Taste: Dry, complex, and botanical. It blends the character of fresh sugarcane, citrus bitterness, allspice, cinnamon, vanilla, and a subtle hint of almond.

Finish: Warm, spicy, and long, with lingering notes of citrus peel, wood, and aromatic spices.

Boukman Botanical Rhum draws on the Haitian tradition of spiced rum drinks but presents it in a modern and meticulously crafted interpretation. Fresh sugarcane juice creates a crisp and botanical base, complemented by citrus bitterness, warming spices, vanilla, and the character of local woods.

Serving:

Best enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails. The producer recommends it, for example, in variations of the Negroni Blanc, Haiti Libre, or Old Fashioned.

Botanicals used:

  • local woods and barks: bois bandé, zou’devant, campêche, bois cochon, and oak

Boukman Botanical Rhum is an original Haitian spirit for customers seeking a dry, spicy, and less conventional rum style with a distinctive botanical character.

About the Boukman Rhum brand:

Boukman Rhum is a Haitian brand founded in 2016 by Adrian, an entrepreneur in the beverage industry, and Josette, the founder and president of the nonprofit organization Haiti Futur. Their goal was to introduce the world to the richness of Haitian culture, traditional sugarcane production, and local botanical ingredients.

The brand name refers to Dutty Boukman, one of the leaders of the uprising that sparked the Haitian Revolution against French colonial rule. Boukman thus became a symbol of resistance, freedom, and Haitian independence.

Production takes place exclusively in Haiti. The sugarcane is supplied by an agricultural cooperative in the Croix-des-Bouquets region, and the decorative elements of the bottles are produced by the Deux Mains cooperative in Port-au-Prince. The brand thus supports local production, employment, and craftsmanship.

Ten percent of Boukman Rhum’s profits are reinvested in educational projects through the Haiti Futur organization. The brand also collaborates with Solidaridad to promote more sustainable sugarcane cultivation and increase yields for local farmers.
