The history of Becherovka:
Becherovka is an iconic Czech herbal liqueur and is one of the oldest alcohol brands in the history of the Czech Republic, with continuous production since 1807. This world-famous liqueur is produced in Karlovy Vary, where a secret recipe is still followed, known only to two people, adding to its mystique and character.
Josef Vitus Becher, the founder of Becherovka, obtained the original recipe from Dr. Frobrig in 1805 and fine-tuned it to perfection. The recipe contains a blend of approximately twenty types of herbs and spices, sourced from exotic destinations as well as from the region of Karlovy Vary.
Johann Nepomuk Becher, known as Honza, took over the colonial trade and liqueur production from his father Josef. Johann is considered the founder of the company in the true sense of the word, as he developed the production for almost 40 years. His signature is still on every bottle of Becherovka today.
In 1866, Honza Becher's brother-in-law, Karel Laube, brought about the revolutionary design of the flat bottle shape, which has been cast in the typical green glass since 1907. In 1867, production was moved to a new factory in Steinberk, which allowed direct train connections to the whole world. The Home of Becherovka visitor centre now stands on this site.
In 1871, the family business was taken over by Gustav Becher, who successfully promoted and legally protected the liqueur. Gustav, a native of Karlovy Vary, connected Becherovka with the traditional Carlsbad craft of porcelain, and introduced the iconic porcelain liqueur cups.
