The Macallan Fine & Rare 1978 is a vintage single malt whisky that matured quietly for almost four decades before being bottled in 2018 at a natural cask strength of 59.2%. The result is an intense, structured, and surprisingly elegant expression of the distillery's archive.
1978 – culture and science change the world
1978 brought the first "test-tube baby," Kate Bush's musical breakthrough with the hit Wuthering Heights, the film Grease, and the first radio episode of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. As the world entered a new era, one of the rarest vintages in the Fine & Rare collection began to take shape in hogshead number 13810.
The Fine & Rare edition is the most extensive collection of vintage single malt whisky in the world. Each vintage is an authentic reflection of a specific cask and year of distillation.
Edition specifications:
Long maturation in a hogshead cask allowed for the slow development of complex spicy and citrus tones while maintaining the purity of the distillate.
Tasting profile:
Aroma: Oak spice, bitter orange gradually transitioning to sweetness. In the background, a delicate, balanced peat smoke.
Taste: Distinctive structure of cask strength. Again, oak spice and bitter orange, which develops into sweeter notes, harmoniously complemented by a subtle hint of smoke.
Finish: Smooth, silky, and creamy, with a long finish of peaty-orange sweetness.
The Macallan Fine & Rare 1978 is a whisky with a distinctive cask intensity, limited number of bottles, and investment and collector's potential. A whisky that combines the power of time, precise cask selection, and character that has been formed over almost forty years.
The Macallan Distillers Ltd.
The Macallan Distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, originally a teacher and barley grower, who leased land in Easter Elchies in 1819. The Macallan was one of the first Scottish distilleries to be officially licensed and has gradually built a reputation as one of the most prestigious single malt whisky brands in the world.
From the beginning, its character has been shaped by three key influences – Scotland, Spain, and North America. It is precisely this emphasis on the selection of raw materials and, above all, on maturation in carefully selected sherry casks from Spain that has become one of the pillars of this iconic brand's style. Merchant Roderick Kemp, who bought the distillery in 1892 and cemented its long-term association with sherry casks, also played an important role.
A legendary milestone was the 1926 cask, which was bottled after sixty years as The Macallan 1926 60 Years Old – one of the most sought-after whiskies of its time.
In 2018, the brand opened a new architecturally exceptional distillery designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, which combines modern technology with respect for the surrounding Speyside landscape. In 2024, the distillery celebrated 200 years since its founding – two centuries of craftsmanship, innovation, and exceptional quality that have defined the style of The Macallan.
