Peated Rum Moscatel Finish is a limited-edition peated rum from the Peated Rum Batch 1 series. It is a premium blend of rums aged 1 to 8 years, combining a sweeter rum base, a Moscatel cask finish, and an unconventional smoky character. This edition is among the first releases of Peated Rum and demonstrates how interestingly rum can interact with peat smoking, a technique known primarily from the world of whiskey.

Behind the creation of Peated Rum is the Dutch company Schotman and its owner, Eric Koster. He asked himself why only whiskey should be peated and what rum with a smoky profile would taste like. After initial experiments with a small amount of rum, he discovered that the smoky aroma could be transferred to rum very convincingly. The result was the first peat-smoked rum, a concept that Eric Koster had patented.

Production:

Fermentation takes approximately 504 to 535 hours. The rum is a blend of distillates from both column and pot still distillation. The first release of Peated Rum was bottled in the summer of 2021, with only 230 bottles of each variant produced, making this edition a highly limited tasting and collector’s item.

Tasting Profile:

Nose: Sweet and smoky, with notes of sweet tobacco and leather.

Palate: Distinctive and layered, with notes of dried fruit, particularly plums and pears. Complemented by honey, tobacco, and leather.

Schotman is one of the newer companies in the spirits market, but thanks to Peated Rum, it has clearly distinguished itself from conventional rum production. Eric Koster began experimenting by smoking a small amount of rum and then aging it in a small cask. When it turned out that the rum could carry the peat smoke surprisingly well, the first limited edition of Peated Rum was created.
