Product description

Balvenie 18Y Pedro Ximénez Sherry Cask is an elegant Scottish single malt whisky that combines the smoothness of traditional aging in American oak with the rich, sweetly fruity character of Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The result is a lively, harmonious, and pleasantly summery whisky with notes of honey, vanilla, mandarin, figs, lavender, and delicate spices.

Production and Maturation:

The whisky is first matured in traditional American oak casks, which impart warm notes of honey and vanilla to the spirit. It then matures in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, known for their intense dessert-like sweetness. It is this second cask that brings sweet lavender, mandarin, figs, and subtle cloves to the final profile.

Pedro Ximénez is a Spanish variety of white wine grapes used to produce sherry with a rich, sweet, and dessert-like flavor. Casks previously used for this sherry are prized in the world of Scotch whisky for their ability to impart depth, fruitiness, subtle spice, and a velvety-sweet character to the spirit.

Tasting Profile:

Nose: Harmonious and sweetly fruity, with notes of lavender, mandarin, figs, honey, and vanilla.

Palate: Rich, lively, and smooth, with a blend of sweet lavender, mandarin, figs, warm vanilla, and honeyed notes from American oak.

Finish: Delicately spiced, with a hint of clove, lingering with fruity sweetness and an elegant sherry character.

Serving:

Balvenie 18Y Pedro Ximénez Sherry Cask is best enjoyed slowly, neat. Thanks to its higher alcohol content of 48.7%, it offers a fuller flavor, a more pronounced structure, and a longer finish. Its gift packaging makes it a prestigious choice for lovers of quality single malt whiskey.

Balvenie 18Y Pedro Ximénez Sherry Cask is a whiskey for customers seeking a mature single malt with a pronounced sherry cask influence, a fruity-sweet profile, and a gently spiced finish.

The Balvenie Distillery:

The Balvenie Distillery, located in Dufftown in Scotland's Speyside region, is one of the last truly traditional distilleries in the world. Its story begins in 1892, when entrepreneur and visionary William Grant recognized the potential of the dilapidated Balvenie Mains estate. He began building a distillery on the property, which he put into operation just one year later, laying the foundation for one of the most respected brands of Scotch single malt whisky.

Unlike most other distilleries, The Balvenie Distillery still produces its own malt, has its own malt drying kilns, its own cooperage, and maintains a team of copper boilermakers, which is truly exceptional in today's world.

For many years, the distillery was headed by David C. Stewart MBE, a legendary malt master who joined The Balvenie in 1962. He pioneered the technique of cask finishing – maturing whisky in different types of casks – and is responsible for many of The Balvenie's iconic editions, including the 12-year-old DoubleWood and the 21-year-old PortWood.
