Ardbeg Anthology: The Beithir’s Tale is the third and final legendary edition of the Ardbeg Anthology collection, inspired by a mysterious creature from local folklore. This exceptional whisky draws on the tale of Beithir, a giant serpentine monster that, according to legend, roamed the distillery grounds, leaving behind a trail of smoke, mystery, and unease. The result is a distinctly aromatic whiskey with a character as elusive as the legend itself.
Characteristics:
The whisky was aged for 15 years in specially designed ex-bourbon barrels that were first exposed to air, then heavily charred, and finally lightly charred. It is this unusual approach to aging that creates its exceptionally layered profile, combining peaty smoke, molasses, coffee grounds, citrus, and spices. The finish unfolds with long waves of vanilla and smoked butter that slowly spread across the palate.
Tasting Profile:
Nose: Pungent, oily, and spicy; molasses, creosote, smoked herbs, roasted apples, raisins; after adding water, eucalyptus, menthol, fennel, and pine.
Taste: Balanced, effervescent mouthfeel, peat smoke, coffee grounds, currants, lemon balm, smoked mandarins, sharp smoky note.
Finish: Long and winding, with subtle hints of vanilla and smoked butter.
Awards:
Ardbeg Anthology: The Beithir’s Tale is a whisky for lovers of distinctly smoky, complex, and narratively rich releases. It offers Ardbeg’s classic peaty character while adding unusual depth, spiciness, and aromatic diversity.
About the Ardbeg distillery:
Founded in 1815 by John Macdougal, Ardbeg has a rich history dating back to the time when Celtic monks sought refuge on the island from raids by the Norse. The island of Islay, characterized by wild nature and untamed shores, offers ideal conditions for producing unique whisky—an abundance of soft water, fertile soil, and peat, which gives the local whisky its distinctive profile.
Ardbeg is not only the name of the distillery, but a symbol of tradition, quality, and an unshakable spirit that has defined the Scottish island of Islay for more than two centuries. Recognized worldwide for its uniqueness and awarded many times at prestigious competitions, Ardbeg stands at the forefront of whisky production and is considered one of the finest whiskies in the world.
In 2021, a unique cask from 1975 was sold for a record £16 million, marking an extraordinary milestone in the distillery's history. In keeping with the distillery's tradition of social responsibility and heritage, £1 million of the proceeds were donated to community projects on the island of Islay, underscoring Ardbeg's commitment to its community.
