The Macallan Lalique Decanter 72 Years Old is one of the oldest and rarest single malt whiskies ever released by the distillery. Distilled in the 1940s, this exceptional vintage has been maturing for over seven decades and celebrates a new era for the brand and the opening of the iconic new distillery at Easter Elchies.
Characteristics:
This edition was created in collaboration with the legendary French house of Lalique and is part of the Six Pillars collection, which pays tribute to the six fundamental pillars of The Macallan brand.
The clear crystal decanter captures the architectural lines of the new distillery designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. Its horizontal silhouette reflects the undulating roof of the building nestled in the Speyside landscape. Each decanter is presented in a handcrafted presentation case inspired by the interior of the distillery, made with exceptional precision.
The limited edition consists of only 600 individually numbered pieces worldwide.
Maturation:
This whisky began its maturation shortly after World War II – a time of renewal and optimism. Seventy-two years of patience, care for the casks, and respect for tradition have created a spirit of extraordinary depth and elegance.
Tasting profile:
Color: Golden amber.
Aroma: Delicate peat at the start, transitioning to the soft smoke of old oak. Refreshing citrus – lemon and green apple – complemented by vanilla pods, raisins, and a slight hint of ginger.
Taste: An elegant combination of delicate peat smoke and creamy vanilla. Sweet oak tones give way to woody spices and gradually recede to viscous citrus freshness and green apple tones.
Finish: Medium length, fruity, with a sweet oak aftertaste.
The Macallan Lalique Decanter 72 Years Old is not just a luxury collector's item. It is a historical milestone for the brand, a combination of architecture, design, and whisky mastery—and one of the most significant gems of the modern era of The Macallan.
The Macallan Distillers Ltd.
The Macallan Distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, originally a teacher and barley grower, who leased land in Easter Elchies in 1819. The Macallan was one of the first Scottish distilleries to be officially licensed and has gradually built a reputation as one of the most prestigious single malt whisky brands in the world.
From the beginning, its character has been shaped by three key influences – Scotland, Spain, and North America. It is precisely this emphasis on the selection of raw materials and, above all, on maturation in carefully selected sherry casks from Spain that has become one of the pillars of this iconic brand's style. Merchant Roderick Kemp, who bought the distillery in 1892 and cemented its long-term association with sherry casks, also played an important role.
A legendary milestone was the 1926 cask, which was bottled after sixty years as The Macallan 1926 60 Years Old – one of the most sought-after whiskies of its time.
In 2018, the brand opened a new architecturally exceptional distillery designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, which combines modern technology with respect for the surrounding Speyside landscape. In 2024, the distillery celebrated 200 years since its founding – two centuries of craftsmanship, innovation, and exceptional quality that have defined the style of The Macallan.
