Dun Bheagan Laphroaig 20 Year Old 1998 is an exceptionally rare independent bottling of single malt whisky from the legendary Laphroaig distillery on the island of Islay. The whisky was distilled in June 1998, then aged for a full 20 years in bourbon casks nos. 6835 and 6837, and in 2019, independent bottler Ian Macleod Distillers bottled it at its natural cask strength of 54.9% alcohol.

The entire edition consists of just 396 bottles, making it an interesting collector’s item for fans of older Islay whiskies. The whisky was not chill-filtered and is bottled in its natural color without added coloring.

The long 20-year maturation has softened Laphroaig’s distinctive character and added further layers to it. The typical peat, sea saltiness, and smoke intertwine here with citrus, vanilla, honeyed sweetness, oak, and more mature fruit notes. Nevertheless, thanks to its cask-strength bottling, the whiskey retains a very intense character.

Tasting Profile:

Color: Dark gold to amber.

Nose: Elegant peaty smoke, sea air and saltiness, iodine, citrus zest, delicate vanilla, oak, and fruity notes.

Palate: Rich and mature, with smoky malt, ash, salted caramel, honeyed citrus, spices, and a hint of tropical fruit.

Finish: Very long, smoky, and warm, with lingering peat, sea saltiness, and mature oak.

Serving:

Due to the high alcohol content, we recommend tasting the whiskey neat first and then adding a few drops of water if desired. This can open up additional fruity, malty, and smoky layers.
