Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1998 is an exceptional 23-year-old whisky presented in a luxurious gift box from the prestigious Grand Vintage range, which beautifully captures the elegant and experimental style of the Glenmorangie distillery. It was created at a time when Dr. Bill Lumsden began to fully develop his ideas and seek new ways to take Glenmorangie’s delicate and fruity character even further. The result is a rich, lively, and wonderfully layered whisky that combines classic maturation in bourbon casks with the influence of Oloroso sherry casks, plus a unique experiment in new charred oak casks.
It is precisely the use of new, custom-made and charred casks that has given this whisky its spicy depth, more intense color, and buttery, toasty character. After more than two decades of maturation, a whisky has emerged that overflows with ripe fruit, orange chocolate, delicate butteriness, and elegant spices. The overall impression is rich, yet still harmonious and refined.
Tasting Profile:
Color: Deep amber.
Nose: Caramel, ripe fruit (pears, plums, baked apples), subtle oak, vanilla, mint, a delicate waxy note; after adding water, lemon, mandarin, sweet tobacco, lavender, a hint of ginger.
Taste: Lively fruitiness, chocolate notes, subtle butteriness, caramel, raisins, figs, orange chocolate, cloves, ginger, anise.
Finish: Smooth and soothing, with notes of sugared almonds, leather, and dates.
Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1998 is a whisky for lovers of mature, elegant, and imaginatively crafted single malts. It offers a beautiful balance between Glenmorangie’s fruitiness, the sweetness of sherry, and the spicy depth of new oak.
About Glenmorangie Distillery:
The story of Glenmorangie begins in 1843, when farmer William Matheson and his wife Anne built a distillery in the Scottish Highlands in Ross-shire. At the time, he may have sold his whisky for just a shilling a gallon, but his vision was far-reaching. The whisky was named after the peaceful landscape he loved – Glenmorangie, which means "Valley of Peace" in Gaelic.
Matheson laid the foundations for what became one of the world's most famous and respected single malt whisky distilleries. For many years, it was led by Gordon L. Smart, distillery manager since 1920, and the legendary "16 men of Tain," who handcrafted whisky using time-honored methods.
Today, the distillery is run by Edward Thomas, winner of the Global Distillery Manager of the Year 2022 award at the Whisky Magazine Icons of Whisky Awards. Glenmorangie still employs 24 "Distillers of Tain" who continue the craftsmanship of previous generations.
A distinctive feature of Glenmorangie are the tallest stills in Scotland, as tall as a giraffe. It is thanks to this height that the distillate has more space to develop the delicate, fruity and elegant flavors that are typical of Glenmorangie.
The giraffe has thus become not only a symbol of the distillery, but also a symbol of responsibility. In 2020, Glenmorangie partnered with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland to help protect these endangered animals in the wild.
