The Macallan 33 Years Old Sherry Oak 1989 is an exceptional single malt that represents a collaboration between the iconic The Macallan distillery and the prestigious independent bottler Samaroli, one of the most respected names in the industry since 1968.
The edition is part of the Magnifico series and comes from a single sherry cask, No. 6690. After 33 years of maturation, it was bottled in 2022 in a strictly limited quantity of only 306 bottles, making it a highly collectible item.
Maturation and character:
Maturation in a single sherry cask has given this whisky the classic, noble profile typical of Macallan – with an emphasis on elegance, structure, and natural depth. The 42% alcohol content underscores the balance and smoothness of long maturation without aggressive sharpness.
Tasting profile:
Color: Bright amber.
Aroma: Sweet and honeyed with notes of vanilla and heather. Ripe pears and a subtle hint of licorice emerge.
Taste: Full-bodied, firm and yet smooth. Honey and heather intertwine with a slightly fruity hint of ripe pears.
Finish: Long-lasting, delicate and elegant, with a gradual fade of sweet and floral notes.
Collectible significance:
The combination of The Macallan distillate with Samaroli's signature means an emphasis on the individual character of a particular cask. Each bottle in this edition represents an authentic expression of the 1989 vintage – preserved after more than three decades of maturation.
In its gift packaging, this is a representative and attractive investment for discerning collectors and connoisseurs looking for a combination of a legendary distillery and a prestigious independent bottler.
The Macallan Distillers Ltd.
The Macallan Distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, originally a teacher and barley grower, who leased land in Easter Elchies in 1819. The Macallan was one of the first Scottish distilleries to be officially licensed and has gradually built a reputation as one of the most prestigious single malt whisky brands in the world.
From the beginning, its character has been shaped by three key influences – Scotland, Spain, and North America. It is precisely this emphasis on the selection of raw materials and, above all, on maturation in carefully selected sherry casks from Spain that has become one of the pillars of this iconic brand's style. Merchant Roderick Kemp, who bought the distillery in 1892 and cemented its long-term association with sherry casks, also played an important role.
A legendary milestone was the 1926 cask, which was bottled after sixty years as The Macallan 1926 60 Years Old – one of the most sought-after whiskies of its time.
In 2018, the brand opened a new architecturally exceptional distillery designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, which combines modern technology with respect for the surrounding Speyside landscape. In 2024, the distillery celebrated 200 years since its founding – two centuries of craftsmanship, innovation, and exceptional quality that have defined the style of The Macallan.
