Glenmorangie Calvados Cask Finish is the latest addition to the successful Barrel Select Release series. In his latest experiment—the fifth edition of this series—Dr. Bill Lumsden focused on Calvados and how its rich flavor profile, full of apple orchard notes, can further enhance the classic fruity smoothness of Glenmorangie whisky. He used a whisky that had matured for more than 10 years in American white oak casks as a base to achieve the elegant Glenmorangie profile. He then transferred it to casks that had held Calvados du Pays d’Auge from Normandy for 20 years, where it spent approximately 18 months.
Silky and wonderfully rich, Glenmorangie Calvados Cask Finish blends rounded notes of baked apples and pears with delicate hints of jasmine, narcissus, and vanilla. Unchill-filtered.
Tasting Profile:
Color: Bright gold
Nose: Notes of baked apples, pears, vanilla, almonds, and a subtle hint of wax. Adding a few drops of water releases aromatic floral notes such as daffodils, jasmine, and heather honey. Finally, the scent of sweet pastries emerges.
Taste: Oily yet spicy on the palate. A flood of sweetness from baked pears, caramelized apples, marzipan, anise, and chocolate pralines, along with subtle notes of citrus, eucalyptus, and a hint of charcoal.
Finish: Long and silky.
About Glenmorangie Distillery:
The story of Glenmorangie begins in 1843, when farmer William Matheson and his wife Anne built a distillery in the Scottish Highlands in Ross-shire. At the time, he may have sold his whisky for just a shilling a gallon, but his vision was far-reaching. The whisky was named after the peaceful landscape he loved – Glenmorangie, which means "Valley of Peace" in Gaelic.
Matheson laid the foundations for what became one of the world's most famous and respected single malt whisky distilleries. For many years, it was led by Gordon L. Smart, distillery manager since 1920, and the legendary "16 men of Tain," who handcrafted whisky using time-honored methods.
Today, the distillery is run by Edward Thomas, winner of the Global Distillery Manager of the Year 2022 award at the Whisky Magazine Icons of Whisky Awards. Glenmorangie still employs 24 "Distillers of Tain" who continue the craftsmanship of previous generations.
A distinctive feature of Glenmorangie are the tallest stills in Scotland, as tall as a giraffe. It is thanks to this height that the distillate has more space to develop the delicate, fruity and elegant flavors that are typical of Glenmorangie.
The giraffe has thus become not only a symbol of the distillery, but also a symbol of responsibility. In 2020, Glenmorangie partnered with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland to help protect these endangered animals in the wild.
