Product description

Glenmorangie Palo Cortado Barrel is a limited edition that, for the first time in the brand’s history, was finished in casks previously used for the rare Palo Cortado sherry. This is precisely what brings a new depth, sweetness, and distinct nutty character to Glenmorangie’s typically smooth and elegant style. It is a whisky for those who enjoy a richer, more complex Highland single malt with an unconventional cask finish.

Characteristics:

The whisky was aged for a total of 12 years. It first spent 8 years in white American oak bourbon casks, after which a selected batch matured for another 4 years in Palo Cortado sherry casks, which had never been used at Glenmorangie until then. It is this finish that gave it its unmistakable complexity and silky, rich elegance.

Glenmorangie Palo Cortado Barrel is itself a very rare sherry, produced only exceptionally when the protective layer of yeast known as “flor” fails to form on the wine or disappears early, causing the wine to continue aging oxidatively. The result is a whisky that blends dark plums, milk chocolate, Brazil nuts, and sweet spices into a very harmonious whole.

Tasting Profile:

Glenmorangie Palo Cortado Barrel has a deeply sweet, nutty, and exceptionally complex character. Yet it retains the silkiness and smoothness typical of Glenmorangie. It is a distinctive yet elegant whisky, perfect for slow savoring.

Tasting Profile:

  • dominant nutty notes
  • dark plums
  • milk chocolate
  • Brazilian nuts
  • sweet spices

About Glenmorangie Distillery:

The story of Glenmorangie begins in 1843, when farmer William Matheson and his wife Anne built a distillery in the Scottish Highlands in Ross-shire. At the time, he may have sold his whisky for just a shilling a gallon, but his vision was far-reaching. The whisky was named after the peaceful landscape he loved – Glenmorangie, which means "Valley of Peace" in Gaelic.

Matheson laid the foundations for what became one of the world's most famous and respected single malt whisky distilleries. For many years, it was led by Gordon L. Smart, distillery manager since 1920, and the legendary "16 men of Tain," who handcrafted whisky using time-honored methods.

Today, the distillery is run by Edward Thomas, winner of the Global Distillery Manager of the Year 2022 award at the Whisky Magazine Icons of Whisky Awards. Glenmorangie still employs 24 "Distillers of Tain" who continue the craftsmanship of previous generations.

A distinctive feature of Glenmorangie are the tallest stills in Scotland, as tall as a giraffe. It is thanks to this height that the distillate has more space to develop the delicate, fruity and elegant flavors that are typical of Glenmorangie.

The giraffe has thus become not only a symbol of the distillery, but also a symbol of responsibility. In 2020, Glenmorangie partnered with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland to help protect these endangered animals in the wild.
