Product description

It all started with a crazy trip to Latin America. The two friends became enchanted with Salvador and awakened an unexpected enthusiasm. Neither of them believed that this small country would captivate them, but that's exactly what happened. Thurman Wise and Pepij Janssens remained fascinated by its immaculate beauty and rawness. This trip left them with a desire to present the world with a product that would capture El Salvador in its purest form. And Ron Colón Salvadoreño was born.

Detail:
When the colonizers of the New World traded with the indigenous people, they often used rum as a form of currency. Sugar cane and its products were to the world powers then what oil is to them today. It was common for wars to be fought over sugar and rum. Later, however, money came along and rum ceased to be a means of payment.

At the end of the 19th century, the then government of El Salvador decided to rename its Salvadoran peso 'colón' in honour of Christopher Columbus, the 'discoverer' of America. The colón remained El Salvador's currency until 2001, when it was replaced by the US dollar. The combination of these two ideas - rum as a currency and a new name for the Salvadoran peso - gave rise to the brand name Ron Colón.

The new product was inspired by the banana trees that grow on the Jags Head Coffee plantations. The leaves provide shade for the coffee cherries. The fruits of these banana trees are red and have a sweet taste that can be described as a regular banana with a hint of raspberry sweetness. Bartenders Eric van Beeck and Danil Nevsky took the next step by showing the Ron Colón brand producers how to make a great banana oleo syrup. At their suggestion, Ron Colón Salvadoreño Red Banana Oleo was created - a combination of Ron Colón Salvadoreño rum, banana oleo and macerate made from dried and fresh bananas. Finally, the producers added sugar cane syrup.

Flavour profile:
The aroma is of tropical fruits, especially banana. The aroma of fresh sugar cane is accompanied by the sweetness of molasses and a touch of earthy 'funk'. In addition to the banana, the taste also shows notes of cocoa and caramel.

Producer/importer:
What started as an enthusiastic project of two friends soon grew into a team of professionals. It was Thurman Wise and Pepij Janssens who spearheaded the idea of enclosing the liquefied essence of Salvador in a rum bottle. Andres Trigueros and his family at Jags Heads Coffee are also an important part of the team, who have given the Ron Colón brand the privilege of working with one of the most interesting coffee farms in El Salvador. Thanks to Felicity Gransden, new flavour innovations are being created and Chris Rehberger is responsible for the company's visual identity.
